What is holistic fitness?

I have gotten that question quite a bit. When revealing that I have taken a holistic approach to my well being, reactions have ranged from “Tell me more!” to “Those people are snake oil selling quacks.”

Simply stated, holistic fitness is about overall fitness. In fact, the word holistic comes from the word “whole.” You can have a body like a Greek god or be a world-class athlete, but if you’re not at a healthy point mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, then you’re not as fit as you could be. While the holist places a premium on diet and exercise just like the traditional model, catering to our mental and spiritual well being is just as important.

Your body is not a series of parts and systems that function independently of one another. Everything is connected. For example, if you are deficient in a certain nutrient, every one of your body’s metabolic processes that utilize that nutrient is affected, not just the area(s) where you’re experiencing symptoms.

So who, exactly, could stand to benefit from holistic health and fitness? The simple – and resounding – answer is ANYONE and EVERYONE. But here are some reasons people gravitate toward the holistic model that may resonate with you.

  • … looking to get into your best shape physically, mentally, and spiritually.
  • … looking to learn various nutritional methods, backed by scientific research, that promote your body’s God-given ability to heal itself.
  • … plagued by non-physical issues, such as anxiety or depression, and seek a method of improvement that is non-invasive and free of synthetic drugs and all the side effects they bring.
  • … not wanting to develop the aches, pains, ailments, and physical limitations of your parents and grandparents when you get to be their age.
  • … an athlete and/or fitness buffs and want to continue to pursue what you love without physical regression.
  • … wanting to look and/or feel younger.
  • … simply want to feel empowered and in control over your own body and health, rather than having your body and state of health control you.
